I attempted to make it to MITP today but that was short lived due to my engine constantly cutting out! *angry*

I trying to figure out if its fueling or spark, but im finding it difficult to fault find. Basically I can drive it for about 30 seconds then it will just cut out. Its more noticable on load than on cruise, if I lift off I can sometimes keep it going but more often than not it will cut out completely and take a couple of goes to restart.

So far today I have taken the fuel pump off (old style SU pump) and that seems to be working fine. I can't feel it pumping when I put my hand on it, but when I first turn the ignition on I can hear it make a few pumps (until it reaches pressure) then it stops...is this normal?

I then decided to check the plugs to see what they looked like...The fourth looked exactly the same.

What I did find when I removed them was this happend to 3 out of 4 of the plugs. Never had this before! *surprised*

This makes me think that maybe the plugs weren't firing on load? I also noticed an odd missfire whilst testing the pump, and a few drips of fuel coming out of the exhaust? *Confused*

One other thing I have noticed is that twice I have had a major shock from the HT leads when I was trying to get the engine started a while back (since then I have gone no where near them with the engine running!). The first time it happend it blew an LT wire off the coil, and made my arm ache for a long time after. Could this be down to poor insulation on the plugs or something else?

Apologies for the long post, just trying to give the best outlook on what is happening.

Cheers
Matt

There's the problem right there, those plugs are Champions *tongue*

The colour of the plugs look about right.

are you running contact breakers or electronic ignition?

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

How does rust in the tank stop the engine? :)

Im running contact breakers, and the condensor and points are new too. The plugs were unused but not sure how old they are, they were in my engine when I got it?

I did think about rust/crap in the tank, but whenever I take the hose off the fuel pump inlet, fuel gushes out of the hose from the tank, so im kind of thinking its not that...but still worth checking I suppose. *oh well*

leeds/wakefield.

I did the very same thing today and it cured my misfire from hell,

however does it cut out after its been running a while or will it do it within 5 mins running, if it only does it when warm /been runnig a while, think dodgy coil

Ive had plugs break like that before on other cars. I just put it down to age or quality of plug.

Ive only driven it once without letting it warm up first and that ran fine, so it could be the coil. I have noticed it getting worse the last few times ive taken it out.

I had one dodgy plug lead on my old clubman. It used to break down once the engine was warm and it would misfire like mad. Stop for a few minutes and it would be OK again for a mile or two.
