Genaral rule of thumb is stick to the bk450.

There seams to be mixed views on the cometic gaskets.

I use one for a bit when the BK450's when through their dodgy patch, they are a good gasket but pricy, even though they are reusable.

Most modern engines use MLS gaskets now, and they also use them on older ones as replacements.
They do work very well. Just ensure mating surfaces are very clean and with an excellent smooth finish.

Although Ive never used them on a Mini. Whilst they are supposed to be re-usable. I wouldnt unless I was really stuck. But then Ive also re-used BK450's when Ive been stuck lol

Warwick.

1380rich uses one i think... not 100% though
my peugeot uses a metal shim HG and iv used a sealing compound on that only around oil pressure holes, there prone on the 16v engines to pump it out the side of the block for some shit reason and i dont want to risk it... cant see why ordinarily you would need a compound on there as thats the job of the HG in the 1st place

Most modern MLS gaskets have a thin black coating on them which effects a seal for water/oilways etc.
Very early versions were just plain bare metal, a little like the old Rover V8 tin gasket. So people applied a non setting sealer to those in places.

Modern MLS gaskets should be fitted spotlessly clean and dry. Although likely a light coating of a non setting sealer wouldnt do any harm if used very lightly.
