Well if it wants choke to run then that suggests that it is just too lean. If you have just started it everything probably needs setting up. Do you have an AFR sensor, that will tell you need to know?

Air Fuel Ratio. Commonly called a wide band sensor.

Before we go any further a few details about the car and engine would be useful and maybe a more detailed description of the problem.

its a 1310 no intercooler just running at standard psi.

needs full throttle to start when hot and will only run with the choke open. if not it cuts out and wont rev with out spluttering

i would suggest getting an afr gauge, there are 2 types norrowband and wideband, the wideband are 10x better but the price reflects, but it was the best £130 i ever spent.

thats a narrowband,

to get a useful reading you need a wideband.

Yes you will need to weld a boss into the down pipe.

However, lets not get ahead of ourselves here. You need to get it running before an AFR will help. First off I would try making it richer with by adjusting it. Can you tell me if it runs without choke with no boost and do you know what your timing is set to?

Give it a good couple of turns on the mixture screw then and see if it improves.
