I have been working on the Mini this morning and had to give up as being annoyed with the welding helmet! I have a Sealey solar power helmet that can react to light.

My problem is that I am welding in the boot and as I am in the garage, there's not much natural light so I put a halogen light in the boot and the helmet goes black right away so you can't even see where you are welding before you pull the trigger.

Do any of you have the same problem and know of a solution. Or do any of you weld in the same conditions and have no issues with your helmets.

my hemet has a knob on the side to adjust for background light, but if its too bright it will trigger no matter what.

try angling the light away from you of sheiding it witha bit of card, (watch out for sparks though!)

Yeah, tried adjusting the know but it seems to dim or brighten the light when you are not arcing.

I have tried having the light behind me, in front of me, on top etc.

Can't seem to get it right.

Been looking on the net and seen a different helemet that is battery opperated which may be better than solar powered. http://www.r-techwelding.co.uk/Welding_Con...reactive_silver

Any comments on these?

I have a sealey welding mask and it works fine if you use an LED lead light and point it away from you. You get used to it after a while tbh.

I have had this problem too. It is just a case of moving the light as best you can and adjusting the sensitivity. Usually just using an inspection lamp instead of the halogen works too.

What about using one of the little LED head torches? you can adjust the brightness of it, either put it pointing at what youre working on, or try putting it on as normal over the mask or mounting it to it somehow?

I may be well off the mark, but I thought the light from welding powered the solar panel, and that there were batteries to power the changeover from light to dark. The batteries are often non changeable so it isn't obvious they are fitted.
