no quite sure if i have hit a big problem

went down the garage today to do a bit of work on the mini, i started it up and it made a strange noise like if the water pump bearing had gone so i turned it off.

looked around and seen that there was oil coming from the bottom pulley!!!!! i think the pulley has come loose. would any damage have been done???? i hope not

Sounds like the pulley bolt has come loose. If its only just started then you might be lucky.

It happend to me, and wrecked my key, pulley and threads on the bolt.

Investigate,

if the pulley is coming loose you run the risk of shearing the key that holds the timing gear on, in which case you could trash the engine.

Pull it all of and check the the key (and replace if it looks iffy) I''ll be suprised if the source of the noise and leak dosent become obvious as you pull stuff off.

North of the Netherlands

Take the starter motor out then you can insert an old bearing shell in the flywheel to lock it into place.

no, you need to remove the timing case cover to get at it as its knocked in from the back.

This will give a good chance to have a look to see if the oil thrower ring has been fittd the correct way round and whether the bulge has ben knocked out in the cover if you have fitted a duplex chain. These two issues will give a similar noise to what you describe.

when you fit the timing case cover back on the engine, before you nip the bolts down, fit the crank pulley to centralise the seal, then gently nip the bolts down each a little at a time. Also make sure that you use the correct length screws with washers so that they themselves do not push the front plate away from the block, thus creating a leak that appears incurable, and phantom like.

Depends where the knocking has come from. You state that the oil light came on so that suggests ur bottom end bearings/ oil pump are shot...

As for the pulley not coming loose, torque it up properly, use locktite and knock the lock tabs over
