In my book it is only worthwhile for a screamin' SBU ...

Not that I don't enjoy the beauty of the engineering and the use of off the shelf elements but do turboed minis need the extra gears / added top speed ?

Who says the taller top gear is only for extra speed ? It could equally be a better cruising gear. And as Carl said, if 1st is too short, you dont have to use it.

Either way it does look like a strong gearset. It is sequentially shifted. And a damn fine piece of engineering. And if the centre web is stronger, that's another plus point.

Apart from possible cost, what really are the downsides ?

I might be wrong but the point of "more gears" is to counnteracts the effect of a narrow power band.

OK I am a little OT because I look into the "more gears" direction whereas most of you are looking in the "stronger" direction.

In France we say : "le mieux est l'ennemi du bien" wich translate in "better is the enemy of good"
Also applicable in the argument between 5 ports and K heads ...

More gears are to give you a wider spread of power, or economy.

Again, I can see no downsides to having more gears in this instance. Fit a tall 2.9 FD and you have a great cruising top gear, with a fairly normal spread 1-5

Obviously if you combine the 6 gears with a short final drive, you'll spend a lot of time changing gear, so might be best suited to track use.
But you would hardly also say that only 4 gears are ideal for any car ?

So what is the difference between the cbr1000 gearset and the cbr1100RR? Is it just the ratios?

Is there a difference between the earlier and later bikes?

Nice!

By the looks of things there is more than one way to fit them in.

Has anyone tried using a stepper motor to change the gears?

I'll be doing a build thread as usual...and probably add a bit of chain drilling into the mix for old times sake. *happy*

Don't be any more of a dick. I'm not getting started on a guessing game, cos thats just as fucking daft as coming on here and saying "we have two of these" and saying nothing else. What is your point really?

For what its worth, to me it looks like that gear set is purpose designed to fit the A series case, and not a cut about motorbike gear set.

You have two of these; I'm happy for you :)
