I always just do it manually, never tried a sniper.

I use JBidwatcher 2.1. It's free and works if you aren't a fuckwit. Don't set it to bid at the last second as time sync with the ebay server isn't accurate enough for it to work properly, try more like 5-10 seconds.

just put in your top price to start with. If it goes over that you don't win simple. If you were willing to pay more, you should have bid more to start with - or i am missing something?

just enter what your willing to pay with a few seconds to spare, because if the sniper does fail and it sells for less than you wanted to bid then you'll have a new screen to pay for, when the nearest thing to hand flys at it in frustration.

Bidding early gives other people the chance to consider and/or get giddy and pay more. So you enter automatically your highest bid with a few seconds to go thus not giving the chance to rebid to others. You save money whenever your maximum bid was higher and a lower unsuccessful bid didn't force the price up that you had to beat. If everyone used sniping it wouldn't work, but as they don't it saves money a lot of the time. Sniping also means you don't have to be sat at your computer at the end of the auction as it is handled automatically.

That's my theory, but I've discovered that there are a lot of people on eBay who consider it more important to win an auction than to pay a sensible amount.

Indeed, shill bidding comes to mind!

I generally put in my final bid 30 secs before the end. My internet won't refresh quick enough to get another bid in, so then I just wait. If I don't win I wait for the next one, even with a specific car, I'm sure a better one will come along.

www.auctionsniper.com never let me down.

I always bid in the dieing seconds and it's very rare I don't get what I want at my price. PITA waiting round for auctions to end...

Goofbay has never let me down, set it at 2 seconds and sorted, I've won loads with it.

The site also has some other very good tools.

Turbo parts collector at the moment, almost ready.

http://www.auctionstealer.co.uk never let me down. You get three free steals in one week, which is plenty for me, or you have to pay a subscription, but you do get a shorter bid time on that.

Simply put in the price you want to pay and let it do the work. saved me on several occasions when there was something I really wanted. I have a tendancy to forget, and as Rob has said, there are idiots who are intent of out bidding you for the win. Sniping tends to fuck them over.

I've been using jbidwatcher for years and have never had a problem with it. I set the snipe time at 5s before the end of the auction.

And it's free!
