Picking up a stainless manifold for my other car tomorrow, is there any way of cleaning them up easily so they're shiney again?

Those little sanding sponges will do it with a little elbow grease.

Wire wool and brasso?
Wouldnt bother if i were you though mate, it wont stay that way for long unless you intend on cleaning the tarnishing off regularly, just wrap it.

As Andy said, I found Autosol and a bit of rag works well, if you use a longer bit and "saw" it, then it works very well for little effort, but the rag does stretch and so need renewing quite often.

I'm lasey. For round things, I mount them in the pillar drill and just hold the rag against it. You can even have a beer at the same time. Proper man's multitasking.

pickling paste

Nasty stuff, believe it contains Hydrofloric acid.

We have used it where I work in the past, to treat stainless welds.

Stainless steel welds can rust due to high temperature depleating the chromium from the weld surface.

Careful what wire wheel you use, if you use the wrong one and wanted a mirror finish, then you've created a lovely job for yourself!

If your lazy just cover in the pickling paste, leave for 20mins and jetwash it all off, save your wrists for better things.

Pickling paste will not give it the mirror finish like nick wants, It takes the top layer off, it needs to be polished.
