right then, Richard has been helping me with my straight cut box assembly and idler tolerance (read built it for me). He has told me its .001" over tolerance or 0.008". Ive checked with somerford and the 0.136-0.137" shims are £45! how important is it with the sc drops for the tolerance to be bang on??

Has anyone got any shims they dont need????!

Thanks:)

I like to keep em tight when I build them.

Shouldn't matter "too" much with the SC gear but would you be happy with the gear slapping about???

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Have you got an original Rover gasket there? You could try onw of those. Also, make sure that the gasket mating surfaces are CLEAN. I always use an air tool like this

to get ALL the crap away and possibly a little aluminium. This means that all the studs from the casing must go, but I take it that you've done this anyway.

If you grind the mating surfaces with this, I'm sure that you'll get within tolerances. I personally think that 008 is too much. I'd never build something with more than 004. Never.

Do you use a torque wrench when fastening the flywheel housing before measuring?

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.

Hmmmm. Thanks vegard. It's not an original, no. I'll flat off the faces see if it's better

When I got my set I was told to shim them to 0.001" I was told 0.008 was way too loose
