Im in the middle of flat polishing my car, and im going through paper like no end! *surprised*

Where's the best place (read as cheapest) to buy paper? I recon I need 100+ sheets and of 1200/2000 and £50 seems to be the going rate from what I can tell?

Cheers
Matt

If it's clogging up that fast, the paint is no good (or it hasn't cured properly yet).

No way you should even need ten sheets for the whole car (that's 40 strips when you split the sheets up to fit the rubbing block).

You are using it wet arent you? Just if you dont then you will go through that much paper.

You could also be using so much paper if the paint hasnt fully cured.

I sprayed it about 6 months ago, so its definitely cured. I didn't roller it on. lol

I had to repaint the rear quarters a second time as I was unhappy with the finish the first time round, and subsequently because of a gap in the masking paper, some of the panels have a light covering of fine overspray on the horizontal surface.

I started rubbing the paint down wet, but it seemed to take forever so then went to dry flatting, which seemed to speed things up alot. *oh well*

Bare in mind this is my first paint job, and the first few panels I did were not the greatest, so need a fair amount of flatting (especially the roof around the edges). Thankfully the last few panels I did, barely need anything doing to them, so I'll just go straight to wet flatting them.

Try your local paint supplier, I bought a pack of 100 or so sheets a few years back for not alot, come to think of it I might still have some (I can't remember if I got them or my Dad got them when we devided up the tools) I'll have a look when I next get a chance.

Matty tear the sheets in half soak them in warm water and washing up liquid about 30mins before you start, them use some in something like a washing up bottle or I use a sponge, just squeeze some water onto it everytime it feels like its sticking, patience is the answer.

All the above advice is good, but Robert makes the most important point- do not go too fine on grade too soon.

Thanks for all the advive lads...all taken on board. :)

Next question, how much polish do you need to use? And when do you know when you need to apply some more?

Ive read that if you use too much polish then it can cause the panels to go cloudy. *oh well* What kind of finish should you get with G3? Should it be high gloss or a shiney matt finish.

You compound the panel with your chosen compound until it is like glass, smooth, shiny. All the wax or polish does after that is seal the surface and give a bit more lustre.

I always have a bar of soap handy when rubbing down and occasionally rub the piece of paper with it as I,m working -never get any clogging.Use loads of water though, to keep the panel flooded, clear of the paint particles that you are removing.

I flat off with 600 then switch to 1200 grade once the finish is anywhere near.

Final polish with G10 and an orbital polisher.

G3 is fine , put a small amount on the mop head then rub it round the pannel, (do say the door in four sections rather than one big one.) Start the machine off slow to work the compound in rather than full speed and it flying all over the place. You should have a nice glaze over the bit your buffing rather than it caked in compound, many peopl use too much and all it will do is clog the mop head up. Supose its abit of trail and error on what works for you.

rick

ps, matty, what have you painted it in 2K ?

Tadge, are you flatting the painted finish with 600 then 1200. ??????

Yep to the 600/1200.

The car was painted last in 1982, in the open, cellulose of course and still looks pretty good.

600 to knock off all the flies and runs (!!) 1200 to get rid of the 600 scratches and the Farecla to polish up a shine.

Took a long time but seems to have been worth it.
