Hello all

I've got a mini that I sprint and hill climb. Last weekend I bought a brand new set of hi los and yellow spot rubber cones, fitted one front one last night and with the hi lo set in it's lowest position (so the thread isn't up against the inside of the rubber cone) it's sitting a good 5-6 inches higher than it did?

I've checked it's all sitting right and that's ok, rang mini spares and they said to cut the rubber cone? Not sure if anyone can help me out or have any other ideas?

Cheers

This is common with the yellow dot springs. The easiest fix is to cut down the hi-lo. Depends how much it needs to come down

Sure they don't take a little while to settle? my standard cones took ages to settle, then had to keep winding them up.

yup, get some miles on it first. give it a couple of weeks and see how much its settled by.

I have had to modify my hi-los when fitting both red and yellow dot cones.

You can drive 10,000 miles and it won't settle 5-6 inches, 1 inch at best. and the harder red and yellow dot doughnuts barely settle at all in my experience.

Somewhere around Swindon

From Minispares site:
Description

These cone springs will require Hilo adjustable suspension as they sit higher than the originals.Containg an anti fade property and shape which helps them going off during racing and giving hopefully a season of racing before replacement. A softer road going compound is C-STR687. The thick top plate has an internal thread rather than the nut welded in place as per the standard cone springs or copies. these have a yellow dot on the metal base for identification purposes. These are manufactured by a highly technical company involed in rubber on Formula 1 cars. If using these on 10" wheels with Hilos cut 3/4" off the end of the centre threaded bolt of the old type Hilo with a circlip as it will bottom out on the cone spring face and the car will sit high, for extremely lowered cars the hilo face will also need machining a few mm. Like all rubber products -they only have a certain shelf life and being fitted equates to the same

Thanks for the replies peeps.

Starting to think I'm going to keep the old rubbers and send the new ones back...

What I don't understand is surely you should be able to buy parts and not have to modify them.

Over the weekend I'll get some pictures up of the size difference between the old rubbers and news ones. I know over time they will squash and settle but 1-2"-3-4" is going to take more than abit of machining?

Techically 'Adjust A Ride' is a Minisport trade mark, and those aren't Adjust A Ride's. 'HiLo' is a Minispares trade mark (Originally Ripspeed), and those aren't HiLo's either.

They are simply adjustable ride heights *tongue* *wink* They do the same job, pretty much.

Since I was on here last I took the rubber cones to be machined, had 8mm taken off the fronts, it's come down abit more but still needs to come down another 2-3 inches. Somewhere I need to take off another 8mm, may look at getting the knuckle machined and the hi-lo.

What exactly have you had machined?

I presume the metal part thatlocates in the subframe?

Personally I'd have left the doughnut alone and machines as advised above.

Removing rubber in the cone helps none. The threaded bolt will still touch the cone inside if not shortened.

However, if you don't want to listen to people who have done this before you and succeeded......

I've machined the part of the cone that locates then the subframe.

Next is to cut the hi lo down then.

Minispares suggest you machine the hilo not the spring

The instructions are posted above^
