hi this is my first post on the forum

Im currently running a standard 998 city e and am starting to gather parts for a 1275 turbo build. my question is what turbo to run. if i run a t2 the build will be simple (as simple as a turbo build can be) and will allow me to use the mirage manifold, but i have heard the gt1752 is a better turbo that will spool quicker and run more boost? but will it fit on the mirage manifolds or even the the standard metro ones without bulkhead mods (which i refuse to do). power is not my goal (absolute power anyway) I'm just after an engine that is not hugely complicated and doesn't have loads of welds and pipes everywhere...
any more info you need to help my decision can be provided

Its no harder to fit any turbo if you have to modify anything, a t2 wont be any harder to fit than gt17, but the 17 is a more modern and better turbo so i would personally go for that over the t2, finding a good condition one for good money is the hard bit.

on a 998 i'd go for the t2, the 17 is a tad big iirc

gt17 sounds like alot better turbo but what are my manifold choices, would i have to make a custom manifold (not ideal for me), can i buy a manifold kit or does a standard manifold fit.
oh and by the way a friend of mine has a gt1752 on his saab 2l turbo would this be ok for my use? he is upgrading soon so i will have access to the turbo and exhaust if needed

It's a fairly complex subject related to many things.

The t2 is a good turbo in it's own right. Capable of upto 170bhp (more or less). It's a small turbo and suits both the 998 and 1275 engines. Ran witha 998 it spools up around 2500, lower in top gear under load. It'll spool up a lot lower down the rpm range on a 1275 engine.

I have no experience of the gt1752 (yet), but I'm led to believe itll spool slightly higher than the t2 but flows a lot more air and thus is capable of a lot more power. You need to be able to get that air in the engine to be of use though - a good head is a must.

The t2 and gt17 have the same exhaust inlet flange. The gt17 will fit part of the mirage but not the down pipe. You'll have to make one - fairly easy.

If your after an easier life stick with a t2 and buy a mirage. Bloody expensive though

no no no no, you need more boost! you can never ever come on here and say I have enough boost, that's just silly.

just to add to this, i was running a t2 and i had over 170bhp running 14psi. it starts to spool at around 2500rpm like previously mentioned.

this was on a 1310cc engine with a lot of modifications and a CR of approx 8:1

thanks for the fast replies, the exhaust manifold bit is very helpful to know i just need to get an exhaust elbow made from stainless (i am right in saying tht going stainless to non-stainless wont last long arnt i?) as the mirage is stainless.

the main reason for asking is for me currently the gt17 is alot easier to obtain..
in regards to head/CR mods i was thinking mini spares 1275cc low drag 8.8cr items or similar combined with a head from turbo phil OR bedross(sp) (ive read gd things about both of them).

If your thinking of running a gt17 then the turbo mounts to a specific 3 bolt mounting - you'll need the 9000 turbo front pipe for that. then you'll need to fabricate a down pipe from that mount. the mirage will not fit the gt17 unless you cut and shut it but its stainless and the saab pipe isn't.

The mirage kit comes with everything to connect the t2 including the elbow.

the higher the CR (generally) the less boost you can run. you can counter act that by running a good intercooler to bring the inlet temp down to as close to ambient as possible without restricting air flow.

The other side of running high Cr is that the turbo spools A LOT faster so its much more usable on the roads. Lots of decisions to make i think!!!

The GT17 and T2 are the same flange, I have never seen a 3 bolt one. The outlet side is 3 bolt, but not an issue.

The mirage manifold will fit the GT17, but there are issues with the compressor fouling the block. It has been done though.

I personally would go for a GT17 over a T2 every time on a 1275+ engine.

Mirage do a GT17 specific manifold now.

The exhaust side is easy. You can get a new saab down pipe for £40 and cut it up.
