If it's only got 2 cylinders does the gearbox only have 2 gears?

Im sure when they designed the mini, one of the restriction was it had to use an engine already in use, ie the A-series. This might be a prototype, but i dont think it would have been for the mini.

I know nothing of its history, but whatever it is it's pretty much useless. for a start it has no crank, rods, cam etc and what gearbox would it go on?

An expensive paper weight at best.

the design shows a distinct lack of imagination,
talk about starting off with a clean sheet of paper, then not bothering to fucking draw on it,lol

I kind chap pointed me in the direction of some info.

"A two cylinder engine – made by literally cutting an A35 engine in half to create a 425cc twin – was rough and unrefined when used in an A35 test car.. So the now simple-sounding solution of placing the gearbox underneath the engine was born."

This may be part of the history of the A35, which was, as a prototype, re-designed as a possible lightweight car to use more than one design of twin cylinder engine, including both air and water cooled two stroke twins.

I think provenance will be highly speculative because Barney Sharratt, an well known author and researcher of all post war baby Austins up to the mini makes no reference to an engine of this type in any of his books.

By the time the mini came along BMC had discarded the idea of twin cylinder engines and, as we all know, pinched the A series from my A35 !!

Thats funny cos the A35 engine was 948cc so cutting it in half would be 474cc, not 425cc.

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I saw this at the Stoneleigh show about 6 years ago.

Seemed pointless back then at a few hundred quid...

turns out my boss has bought this casting now! the plans seem to be a custom crank, cam and modifying a standard box to fit. i haven't seen it yet but it should be an interesting project.
