I did try to do a search but couldn't find anything.
Currently building a new subframe for my 16v mini read on here and a couple other forums about people moving the top arm pivot point up about an inch so that the arm sits at a better angle and also to stop the ball joints botteming out on lowerd cars.

Anyone got some advise on doing this? and anything else I'll need to do aswell? Steering arm angle?

My reason being i want to run my car fairly low and will be raising the engine (Rover K series) 50mm for better sump clearance aswell.

Pic of the subframe so far, Still got Loads of bracing to put in yet but you can see it would be a faily simple mod to do if its worth doing.

Any advise would be helpfull
Cheers

I have also read about it, nad even considered it, but I too drew a blank on any actual evidence of it being done.

The main reason for doing it is to improve the spring rate with excessively lowered cars stillusing the doughnuts.

If you are using coilovers (I've assumed) then it's probably not worth your while.

You'll need to cut the bumpstop mountings right out to get it low enough to bind the ball joints in my experience.

if you don't move the top arm/bottom arm/tie rod front position and steering rack the same amount it will screw the entire gemoetry up, camber gain, toe in bump, etc - not something you contemplate lightly unless you have acess to something like the Lotus kinematics suspension programme and a nunderstanding of suspension dynamics, at best it'll not handle at worst it'll be dangerous!

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!

We tried this on the pro et drag car we were building. 2 days on the suspension alignment jig and a £600 bill and we ended up going back to the original mount position. Totally screwed up the geometery

thing is when this was done on mini racers back in the day the suspension movement was probably so limited they can get away with it, plus they probably did a lot of other mods to help the situation too, but as said you really need to know whjat your doing and what you want to achive.

The miglias run the subframes an inch higher do they not? Which is why they use the spacers on the tower bolts? Mondo sport do this for road cars as well i think they machine abit off the top of the towers then redo the mounting points for the back and front of the subframe an easy inch lower. Iirc hasnt jimster done this on his car?

Don't follow everything the miglias do. We are often tied by the rule book. If we could move the top arm we would move it the opposite way talked about her in order to get more camber gain.

Veg, horses for courses, I'd bet a large sum of money that a stock 10inch wheeled mini would be faster down a British back road than a mig, as far as I can tell the chap asking the question actually wanted to drive his car on the highway? The mig mini does what it does very well, driving down a typical road is not one of those places.

I could not agree more. Too many people fit race components on their road cars ending up with poor longevity and performance.
