Guys,

I've got my car running pretty well and with a conservative set-up but I've still got one worrying problem. When I lift off the throttle with the engine on boost (10+ psi) it pumps a slug of white/grey smoke out of the exhaust. The exhaust is clean other than when it does this and the smoke smells a bit of fuel.

I'm guessing that its over-fuelling when I lift off, but can't work out why. Has anyone got any ideas/suggestions?

Any help would be gratefully received - I'm entered in the HSA Sprint at Curborough on Sunday and really want to get there.

Thanks,

Mike

Fuel is normally black, White is norm oil could be valve guides. Well that what mine did, before I sent it to turbo phil for a rebuild.

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

Fuelling wise its been set up on a rolling road and everything checks out - I'm running with a pretty conservative state of tune until I get used to things!

I've pulled the head off this evening and there's signs of leakage between 2/3 and the waterways. The gasket doesn't appear to have failed (and it was torqued down correctly) so I'm going to clean things up and rebuild with a new gasket.

I'm wondering if the 'smoke' was water based (it was more on the white side of grey) caused by this failure - anyone had anything similar?

I'll post some pics of the head/block once I've got them downloaded

Pic of head (the ones of the block were too indistinct). You can see the area where I think the leakage is between 2/3 and the waterway - its got almost a 'wave' pattern.

What gasket were you using?

I guess it culd have been suckig water in on over run. But if it was doing that then it would have been compressing the water system on boost.

White smoke from a turbo can be worn turbo seals. Is there any oil in the pipes from the turbo to carb?

Thats what I thought too - but i guess if it was doing that It would also increase the water sucked in on over run too. Would have thought there would have been more of a tell-tale of it pressurising the water system when on boost though.

Pipes are clean - was the first thing I checked.

Should have it back together tomorrow/Thursday (work permitting) so I guess I'll find out then - fingers crossed everything will be OK. I'm well and truly bitten with the turbo A-series bug after the few laps I did at Llandow last Friday and I'm looking forward to getting back into competition after 2 years off!

When on earth did white smoke begin to mean oil?

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.
