I don't think a modern duplex will stretch much at all. With a 5 port timing a couple of degrees either way makes little difference as what you lose on the inners you gain on the outers and visa versa (according to Mr Vizard - Tuning BL's A series Engine - A talk by David Vizard - Part 6)

My duplex has stetched quite a bit TBH. To a point where im going to refit the tensioner this time round aswell as re-checking cam timing.

there are cheap chains and quality chains, i believe the quality chains dont stretch much
with a quality chain i agree with jamie

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

106 degrees is good.

My Phase 2 is timed in at 106 on a pre-stretched chain and it idle's as smooth as a cashmere codpiece. The van's is timed at 110 and needs a few more revs to smooth it out.

The difference however is that the van will rev more than my car.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Hmmmm I went with the included times and used a pre stretched chain to 110....

Does that mean it'll be a little lumpy at idle?

I assume that was the time for best power ability?

Sorry for hi jacking...

Should be fine Al. It's not a bother on van. It just doesn't tick over at 800rpm (nearer 1000rpm)

But my car's power is all over by 5700rpm, where as the van keeps going until 6700rpm

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Thread revival!!!

I've just timed my used phase 2 cam in on a used vernier chain at 110 degrees. (In the middle of the dwell).
Now I've looked it up people are saying time it in at 106/108.
How much difference will it make if I was to leave it at 110? As I've still got the disc on the engine and the gauge etc etc should I just knock it back to 108 or 106?

I'm building the engine for high power/torque.

Thanks
Josh

JT USUALL 1 DEG per 1000 revs pick up or loss, t

There. Are 2 types of chain. An AE which are good then there is a chepo seddons one, made of chocolate you dont see these much now!

Scott minispares do an IWIS German no stretch duplex Chain, these are very good, on that note you will find that its as much as 5 degrees. Advanced as its a perfect. Precision. Fit so take that into consideration, these chains don't stretch. Very much, cost around £18 but worth it.

Thanks Steve.
I'm not sure what the chain is I have. It came with the engine. It doesn't look like a duplex but definitely isn't a simplex chain!
I'll get a pic up of it tomorrow evening.

If the cam was to be timed in at 106 degrees will it make the idle better than if it was set at 110 degrees?
Will it effect the power band in a way it makes it higher up the rev range? Or does it affect the engine characteristics in a different way?

Thanks
Josh

Hi JT, Found that every one degree. Of advancement from 110 degree. On the phase 2 pulls the bottom. End up around 500 revs, but don't go over board.

Take the advise given above with other members.

Ok thanks Steve. I might leave it at 110 as I'm going to set the rev limiter at 7000rpm. I can live with a slightly lumpy idle as I have a sw10 cam in now (na1380)

Thanks
