I've been running 12G940s on 998 blocks for years, but I've never had this happen before.

If you look closely at the coolant hole in the block at the front of the photo you can see where coolant has 'etched' away the block surface. Normally this isn't a problem, but as you can see the head gasket ring runs over the damaged part of the block, bugger.

I would advise others running 998s and 12G940 heads to block this hole up as it had no corresponding hole in the head.

Near Lincoln

must just be particles in the water, if its done that to cast iron i'd wouldn't want to put a softer grade of material into plug it

would it mean a skim of the block deck?

Isn't lead a 'metal'?

If so, it could well be a valid claim...

my plan is to tap the hole and plug it up and then use JB Weld to fill the hole. This will be a tempory solutiuion while I sort a new block.

If I think about it it's probably been like this for a while, so it'll be alright for a bit longer.

It would need too much of a skim to sort this block properly.

stowmaket suffolk

the water must have sat in the space in the head gasket leaving it to eat into the block.

sorry to see that mate, ps did you use some antifreeze.

should be able to tap it with 1/2 unf of unc then as you say a bit of chemical metal and wet and dry afterwards should do the trick(hopefully).

done this on a outboard were the liner had a slight indent in and toiuch wood seams to have held.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

I don't use antifreeze, no. Ihave been using water wetter of similar for a few years now..

I think your spot in on the water eatin the block as it's trapped under the head gasket.

You live and learn.

I pick holes in everything..

In Norway we HAVE TO use proper anti freeze, so this never happens. On several UK used engines I've rebuilt, water ways are way bigger than they are supposed to becasue of internal corrosion. I've skimemd brand new 940 heads 1mm and hit water.

Don't you guys use anti-freeze normally??

In all my road cars I use anti-freeze, but the hillclimber never sees freezing conditions and the water wetter keeps it cooler.

wil_h, know it prob doesnt apply to you as youv no doubt opened the chambers of your 12G940. but i found that SOME 12g940's had chambers that sat just inside the fire ring, and allowed the use of normal tear-drop-cylinder shaped 998 gaskets to be used. i took an old gasket along to scrappy's / mini specialists when picking out a suitable head :)

should add when i pocketed my block i was carefull to stay inside the gasket line of a normal 998 gasket too, so that option was open to me :)

Yeah, I checked a 998 gasket, it's fine on the block (fits around the pockets etc.) but the head chyambers, as you say, are outside the fire ring of the 998.
