Soooooo the long wait has finally arrived - but i cant get the bloody thing to start...

Its running megajolt, and at the moment still have the 998 map in it - i thought i'd leave that as i know it ran. But now what im thinking is the 1293 is soooooo different from the 998 that it needs changing?

There is fuel getting through, there is a spark.

Initially i has the crank trigger wheel incorrect but thats now fixed. the leads are also checked and double checked, ive tried 2 sets of plugs one set known, the other brand new.

i'm at a loss and i dont want to keep trying as it'll just damage the new engine...

Any ideas??

Al. Chuck a dizzy and a 12v coil in mate and connect it to an ignition source. time it in to 11 deg BTDC on the strobe when cranking over.

Leave the MJ all connected but have your spare plugs just cable tied onto the rocker cover to earth em out.
It should at least fire on the dizzy mate.

By leaving the MJ and plugs connected and sparking on the rocker cover you should be able to start it and then chuck a strobe on the MJ leads as a comparison to your dizzy leads and plugs ignition setting. That should at least cross check your idle advance is in line with the dizzy and your map.

Call me later tonight if you want. I'm currently out on the bike at Stow having a cream tea with Seb nd the lads !

Good luck.

Richard.

Minivanless, but reluctantly happy living with the decision. There'll be another one day.

If the cam and CR are the same as the 998 then the map shouldn't really need a change. And if you are using an EDIS asvance will be fixed at 10 deg when cranking anyway.

If it flooded yesterday, the only job to do today is to put new plugs in. NGKs especially can fail when wet and never recover.

BDD should be fine to start, screw the jet to top then down 2 1/2 turns as a starting point (no pun intended).

Have you checked the fuel pressure, maybe try starting with the pump off to ensure that you're not pushing fuel up the jet.

Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

totally different engine;

and it tries to start but never actually fires completely on all four cylinders.

Compression test comes out at 155 accross all four too.

I'm miffed now.

Richard - there's no room for a dizzy with everything in there....

wait.... its just started....

Well it's had it's 20 minutes at 2500 rpm. Bloody loud too. Got a small oil leak to sort and another small coolant leak inside the car.

Seems very cammy at idle, I wasn't expecting it to be that cammy but it revs freely and smoothly.

I'll check the leaks in the daylight and take it out for a spin

It was the ignition leads in the end - ended up just swapping one and two and three an four... Not sure what happened as they were definatly correct at both ends. And I've not touched the wiring. Maybe the cam went in 180 degrees out?

It would be difficult to time the cam in 180 degrees out unless your timing gear is utter rubbish. Maybe the coil pack is labelled up wrong..

i've hed NGK plugs soaking wet and they all recovered perfectly, every time, and I pumped some raw fuel through my engine at the beggining, mind you I always cook the fuel off the plug on the gas burner

I've bought new plugs and a spare set - just in case....

They seemed to work ok last night though.
