When I made my pc I think I got the wrong driver disc with the board,I put a graffix card in which wouldn't run above 480 by whatever pixies 256 colours got round it by installing xp as minimum is 600 by 800 I think.

We have no sound(get the odd beep out the tower speaker) its all pluged in and I think I have onboard soundcard....which prob ain't got the right driver ,so If I by a plug in sound card with install cd will this fix it*oh well*

i'd have thought so yeah. you could try googling the make and number of your motherboard to see if you can find out what drivers it needs and download the proper ones maybe? not sure though i'm not too clever on computers

What chipset is on the motherboard?

Also what make is your graphics card. You should be able to exceed the resolution you quoted, unless the card is ancient!
