Hi!

As per title realy... Are they made of steel or cast iron? I'm talking about factory fitted ones (I guess noone would go through the troubleof retro-fitting them to a std. 998 :) But that's where I found 'em)

Regards,
Jan

They are steel. Don't ask what grade as I have no fricken idea *happy*

I fitted Rover OEM liners to my 16v block to retain the 1275 and it allowed me to offset the bores enough to line up the cylinders to the head. I see no problems with liners and there is no reason not to replace the liners rather than pistons, other than it means twice the machining involved, and a new set of rings. effort and cost wise, its easier and likely a similar cost to fit new oversize pistons

Hi Sprocket!

Quite contrary, I would think that steel liners wear much less than cast iron, so might even be beneficial for the engine's live :) And indeed it's the least worn block I posses - but that might be just coincidence :)

If they'r steel - wouldn't this require different piston rings?

Cheers,
Jan

Yep, as above, both of the linered blocks i have had ive always presumed they were steel, they can be bored out, and i see no reason to use different rings to normal, i don't think anybody has/does.

Cant say Ive ever heard of a steel liner used in any engine.

They are almost always cast iron. Steel would be a bad choice.

Liners are an Iron alloy. Forgive me for thinking an iron alloy is a 'steel'

So are they cast steel? *hehe!* No realy, my knowledge about metalurgy (spelling?) is pretty much - erm - non-existant... :)

The 998 linered blocks are quite a different casting than the non-linered blocks, so should be obvious if it's a factory one or retro fitted.

Got a photo of the inside of the block?

Yep centrifugal spun cast iron. Nothing steel about it. Sometime ductile i.e. some of the graphite is converted from flakes to spheroidal form to make it malleable.

PS only posted so that I could type three of my favourite words :)
