Yep, as above, both of the linered blocks i have had ive always presumed they were steel, they can be bored out, and i see no reason to use different rings to normal, i don't think anybody has/does. Edited by Carlzilla on 28th Oct, 2011. On 26th Jan, 2012 Tom Fenton said:
ring problems are down to wear or abuse but although annoying it isn't a show stopper On 5th Aug, 2014 madmk1 said:

I would think that steel liners wear much less than cast iron, so might even be beneficial for the engine's live :) And indeed it's the least worn block I posses - but that might be just coincidence :) This is the general consensus, try a search Edited by Sprocket on 28th Oct, 2011. Liners are an Iron alloy. Forgive me for thinking an iron alloy is a 'steel' On 26th Oct, 2004 TurboDave16v said:

The 998 linered blocks are quite a different casting than the non-linered blocks, so should be obvious if it's a factory one or retro fitted.

Yep centrifugal spun cast iron. Nothing steel about it. Sometime ductile i.e. some of the graphite is converted from flakes to spheroidal form to make it malleable.
