I have been replacing part of the floor and obviously I will chuck on a set of sills when done but I was wondering would there be a problem with running some 1" box section up the sills? I know this is contrary to the TM disease but I'm not too worried about weight, I have the car apart and for £5 worth of scrap it is tempting to do it if it would add some extra strength to the shell or crash protection. I was going to stich weld it to the inner sill then tie it into the hinge panel at the end.

What do yous guys think?:)

If safety is a concern just bung a rollcage in there.

the box section may add strength but I doubt in the grand scheme of things it'll make much difference.

I ran some angle down my inner sills but this was because the inner sills were made up of 2 panels and I wanted to add addition strength; god knows if it was worth it or not

If the inner and outer sills are good and assembled and welded together properly, IMO it's as good as it gets.

If you want protection and safety, put something higher up, ie, in the doors.

Nothing else on the road is going to challenge the sills, unless it's another Mini...

As others say, seems a waste of time really.

If you want the car to have more strength, fit a cage.

A bit of box section in the sills will do virtually very little.

If anything, rather than box, at least use some nice CDS type cage tube

OK, thanks for the info. I'm not really worried too much about strength but just wondered if it was worth while since the car is apart. I do have a cage but its a 60's type 3 point.

If you want a cage made, contact Stephen Wishart

He'll make/fit one that fits better than any off the shelf item, to whatever spec you want
