yo, i was drivin the other night and my lights seemed a bit bright then sudenly with a blue flash the o/s/f light broke, closely followed buy the n/s/r. i assummed i had a bit 2 much voltage passing through the system so i cracked the stereo on, and all other electrics, this got me home so i stuck a volt meter on the battery and it pushed out 17V!!!!!!!!!!!
so im now fixing the problem, i changed the alternator and the battery, turned the engine on and got 16.7V!!!!!
WTF is happening is there anything else that could do with checking or changing.

It's the alternator that regulates the voltage so if you've changed it you should be getting the correct voltage output. Around 13.8vdc I think it is.

Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe.

Sounds like your alternator was at fault. But even changing to a different one, it could be now that your battery is overcharged. Try leaving your lights/heater blower etc switched on for half an hour, monitor battery voltage, and then start the engine and monitor voltage.

Also have you checked your multimeter is accurate by trying it on say an "AA" battery and making sure you get 1.5V or thereabouts?

Battery's can do this occasioanlly. The (ex) GF complained her mini was makeing a funny smell on the way to AvonPark last year (we were in convoy). Pulled over, and she and her mate jumped out coughing. I thought 'Whats up with them' just as i stuck my head in the car. F**K me, It was like being in a chemical plant!

Sure enough, the battery had done something wierd internally and it was boiling up and throwing out over 18volts!
Lifted it out with a pair of mole-grips and pliers on the terminals and left it on the pavemet. Went off and got another battery, when I got back, the sticker had melted off it and it registered just under 20 volts!

We left it next to the bin in the layby!
