Hey guys,

what solution do you use to detect cracks in heads? ive seen there is a few kits out there, but im sure i read somewhere that you could use a mixture of household products, any ideas?

They can still be VERY hard to find. I'd bring the head to someone with a trained eye.

Blasting or crack detection?

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

As for the household methid, there is a very old fashion technique called the oil and whiting method, its very similar to the modern day dye penetrant inspection, just much less sensitive, oil is applied to the surface being tested and left to penerate the fine surface breaking defects, the excess surface oil is removed and a chalk powder is applied, which works as a blotting agent and creates a bleed out, obviously I can do a much better job with modern consumables, or could be done by magnetic particle.

Cheers for the offer Bennyy but sadly Oxford is no where near Doncaster. I'll have a good going over with the magnifying glass. I plan to have some work done at Rob Walker Engineering as its local so will get him to double check it
thanks again though

Here's a casting I scrapped this morning, non of these cracks were visible to the naked eye, no matter what the surface condition is, nor will you see them with a magnifying glass, if just given a visual inspection this would of passed exept a few areas of porosity, look what dye pen. Has found.

This is why I suggest.you get it checked properly.

The one at the bottom is just a lump of sand that absorbs the dye *wink*
