Hi guys,

Just a quick question. I like the look of the seat subframes made by Topcat but i am rathr short and think i will be too far back in the car if i mounted somthing like that behind the cross member. So my question is how much strength/safety would i loose if i removed the cross member and welded in the seat subframes in its place? Also would this have any legal implementations? The car will also have a roll cage in it.

Thanks

Liam

Don't remove it.

You could make it lower to make mounting the seats easier, but it needs to be there.

what sort of seat are you mounting? I've mounted my MX5 seats on their original runners on a custom subframe behind the cross member but they cantilever over the top of the cross member for the shorter members of the family to drive

This is how I fitted my MX5 seats. Came forwards enough for the missus (5'4") and back enough for me (5' 10").

The rear was spacered up off the floor with inch ish spacers.

Will that doesnt look like a bad idea. Im going to be using kirkey seats i think. Not seen anything else i like and they are a reasonable price.

Awesome seats, got those too.

Do yours weigh also more than earth itself?

I made brackets to bolt it to the original mounts and used some wood and ducktape (MacGyver alert) to raise the back of the rails.

That depends entirely on how good the cage is.

If it's a top spec cage, then I wouldnt be worried about the original crossbeam at all. If it's just a very basic cage, then safest to keep it.

Gotta leave it in. Hugely important.

I used to talk to myself a lot until I realised I wasn't listening.

Didn't pick up on the rollcage bit. Without the cage, don't do it. Be ok with the right bracing in the cage, though.

Maybe if it's a full weld in mig cage. But a 6 point bolt in won't be much use in replacing it.
