Hi, I built my engine and transmission up some time ago on my car rebuild. I have gone from spi to turbo/carb. We have got the engine running nicely. However, there is a problem engaging gears. I have changed the clutch from standard verto (when running spi), to a pre verto setup. I have a minisport ultralight flywheel and grey diaphragm.

I also rebuilt the gearbox with a sccr gearkit, with a the usual 4 pin/sc drops.

It is difficult to engage gears one the engine is running and also they crunch in/out sometimes. We have bled the clutch properly. It is running the standard master cylinder and a new pre verto slave cylinder. There is clutch bite when the pedal is released from the floor until about half way up, then the pedal goes soft. From middle to the top point of the pedal there is nothing there – its very light, and on observation, the clutch arm moves but does not apply pressure to the nuts at the end of the bell housing. We tried winding the adjustment right out on these nuts but the problem remains.

We took the bell housing off to check the correct pre verto bearing was used when I built this up, it is correct. Next we plan to change the long clutch arm, but after that It may be engine out to take a closer look. Has anyone come across this problem or does anyone have any other ideas?

I also used the standard gear linkage, with a chrome mpi gearlever – though the locator grove for this did not match the linkage in my car, maybe I need to look at this also. Though there may be a problem there, it still will not effect the extra travel/clutch bite level on the clutch pedal.

When the engine is running in gear it almost feels as though we have a small amount of clutch drag
The gears are engageabve when the engine is not running but this is difficult also. I am certain I have put this lot together properly, and think this is a technical hitch. Any advice would be much appreciated. Many thanks, dan

We did with the van. Ended up needing a bent clutch arm for some reason. Also double, triple check your clevis pin is in good condition. Also sounds to me like either the adjustment it out or it isn't bled properly.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

the clutch bite is from where the pedal is pressed to the floor and then released. many thanks

i will have to get the arm off the housing and have a look. our thoughts were that the ball on the end of the arm may have had exessive wear,
