Yes a 998 will pull a 2.9, some early 80's cars over here had it fitted as standard.

I drove a 998 with a 2.9:1 fitted for 2 years and to be honest didn't notice any difference in speed between that and the previous 3.1:1

It did struggle in top up moderate hills though.

To be honest my diff of choise is the 3.44:1 for a road car - especially if you mostly do 40mph.

When my 1275 engine blew up a few years ago, I stuck a 998 in for a short period until I got the 1275 rebuilt
The 998 had a 2.9 diff and it was the slowest Mini engine I have ever used
I was being overtaken on hills by articulated lorries, and I needed to change down to third, then second to maintain 40mph
If you are going to turbo it, that should give it the oomph it needs to pull such a tall diff

Hmm the hills on the freeway I drive evey day might prove tough then ATM Im doing a tad over 4 grand to do 100kph (60mph) and it drops 10kph on the up hill parts.. So from what you guys say I'll basically be going backwards! I guess the tall diff isn't a good option so I'll have to put up with the noise
I don't suppose ther is a nother way? 1275? 5speed costs to much

How did it go with hill starts ? Dose the fd affect the other gears much?

fit a 3.2 FD, this will be a good compromise ...... what wheel sizes have you got ?

with 13's and a 2.95 you'll see about 4000 rpm at 80mph.

if your doing 60 at 4k currently it sounds like you have a 3.7 or 3.9

if its a standard is engine not making musch power say 30 odd HP go for 3.2 on those wheel & tyre sizes, possibley 3.1................ IMHO due to the hills

Hmm I'm some what confused can I have say short 1/2 gear and longer 3/4 gears? whould that give me decant acceleration but a good cursing rpm on flat ground I don't think I'd mind changing down for hills so long as the revs are below say 4k if that's evan posable in 3rd ?

I currently run the 2.9 on mu 998 turbo with 13" wheels. 80mph is exactly 4k (as above). It's fine in every situation, I've never really thought that I wanted it lower.

If you are worried just use a 3.1, slightly lower but still a grat diff for cruising.

Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

Australia oi oi oi!

I have a 3.1 that's perfect with a good cam
Otherwise with out the power to pull the diff it is a slug..

Get Graham russels re 83t cam in there and perfect for turbo later *wink*

I beleve it's a 998block with 1100 crank, rods and 1100+60 pistons stock 202 heAd but with new unleaded valves don't know the size? cam is 270 duration .3462 lift at the VALVE uk minispork ultra light steel flywheel presure plate what I'm now regretting a grey diagram! That will be coming out for a softer one and an ap disk the head has a 32/36 down drought webber on it and extractors I have a 123 disy too
The car drives well just ok it's got nothing under 2k cos of the carb I geuss but once the revs come up it's got more power and pulls nice to 6-65k

I don't understand the question.

You do 80% of your driving over 38mph. What you do not state is by how much over.

You also say that your engine is gutless beloww 2000rpm.

Fitting a 2.9 final drive at 38mph will put your engine right in the gutless area in fourth gear

My bad guys
Well the street I live in is 60 the next street is 80 and the next is 100 kph
from my driveway it's about 1k? To the freeway then I sit on that for about 30k then less than 500m to the office each day then most of the time jump in the work truck an go from there..

I thought the 1100 with its longer stroke got plenty of torque low down, and I also believe it can stand more duration than a 998.

All in all, I find odd that it's got nothing under 2K.
Couldn't there be too low a compression ratio, or maybe the cam can be timed in with a tad more advance ?
