:) hi to all!

i'm nico, from italy, rome, and i dont'have a mini but i' ve got a fiat uno turbo i.e.

so, why am i here? i hope you excuse my crappy english, ,two weeks ago i bought a garrett gt2056s brand new. (LOT of money...)

i installed the turbocharger on my 1372cc 8v fiat engine.....but since i fitted the turbo, i had troubles, BIG troubles. i explain:

at 3000rpm i've got 1 bar of boost, above 4000rpm the boost goes up to 2 bar!!!

i disconnet the wastegate actuator and leaved the flapper free to move (90° degrees of movement), result was dramatic: zero pressure until 4500 rpm and then BOOOOM 2 bar and i was forced to close throttle to avoid the turbo goes up and up of boost..

so i hope that someone of you could help me considering the garrett gt2056 is popular mini-owner choice...

Hello and welcome.
If you could not control the boost with the wastegate flap open then you have a serious restriction to the gasses that come out of the wastegate. These need to be able to travel freely into the exhaust system as otherwise the wastegate will not operate, which is the problem you are having I suspect. A picture of your exhaust downpipe may help us.

can you post a picture of your turbo outlet pipe,

If the out let is made from a flat peice of metal it can restrict how far the flap can open, this could be your problem.

thank you all. i'll post some photos of my downpipe when i 'll make them:)

i have to admit i 've made three type of downpipe, and i'm sure that the flapper is able to apen in 90° degrees angle BUT never say never......

i dont'believe that the turbine section of this turbo is too much small for my engine, but i dare that....

perhaps i've found the problem...the wastegate door is only 14mm on the gt2056, i'm planning to port the wastegate up to 25mm and install a new flapper, any suggestions??

The other option is to fit a seperate wastegate.

yes i know, external wastegate is the best way to go, but it need new mainfold, new downpipe, lot of work and i dare i have no space to place it in my very tight engine bay...SO i hope to solve my uncontrollable boost with a larger wastegate and flapper.....stay tuned!

news: i've ported gt2056 wastegate from 14mm to 19mm still with standard flapper.

the boost now is ok from 3000 to 6000rpm i' ve got 1.1 bar, above 6000rpm i've got a little boost creep till 1.5 bar at 7500rpm (limiter)

i am going to port up to 21mm, installing larger flapper.

Hi Nico,

has the 21mm solved your problem?
I'm facing the same problem with my Renault 5 GT Turbo. But currently it is only ported to 17mm.

yes absolutely i can hold as little as 4psi to 7500rpm

- i realise the question may not be aimed at me lol
are you running the GT2056 turbo?
mine is 21.5x21 mm ish because of the shape of the housing mine is angled aswell as enlarged the standard wastegate penny is 24mm iirc

Thanks Brett.
I'll take my dremel and do the porting during this week.
I only wanted to know if it worths a try or the only way is external WG.
So with the 21.5mm porting you only have a wall of 1mm. Isn't it too small?
I also have the problem that my flap is not closing to the central. Could it be fixed?
Big thanks from Hungary. *wink*

Yes, I'm runing on a GT2056 on a Renault 5 GT Turbo. But currently only my Megasquirt overboost protection keeps the boost at 22psi. *happy*

sorry for my absence!

the porting solved ALL my problems, and is not necessary to change the flap, just port the hole of housing as much you can and make all the surface mirror polished.
is very important to port the inlet of wastegate hole IN the inner side of exhaust hausing, and eliminate the ridge in front of the discharge hole.

i've also installed an HKS electronic boost controller and now i can run up to 1.4 bar and over 220hp....

greetings from ITALY!
