I work in the aquarium trade and always have a look at what new technology's are being use tho make tanks and improve the keeping of marine fish, I came across this article and thought it would be ideal for using on cars especially as some people say the minis wipers don't do a great job and moan that there is no rear wiper. The process basicly uses candle soot to create a hydrophobic layer on glass, here's the link to the article as it could be a skilled DIY job for someone:

Not sure how far away it is from being mainstream in aquatics let alone if it will be used on cars but sounds like it could be a useful investment
