This document is an interesting read and may be of use to anyone wishing to assess roller bearings for wear or damage. The document is aimed at taper roller bearings found in most wheel bearing applications, but plain roller and needle roller bearings suffere similar problems.

Points worth noting in areas of the gearbox, as I have previously seen..........

Etching will eventually lead to Line Spalling
True Brinnelling, usually as a result of using a rattle gun or impact wrench to undo or tighten the main shaft pinion retaining nut, or the first motion shaft input gear retaining nut

See any of those do not re use the part.

And the front wheel bearing failure I suffered on a non Timken bearing was similar to the excessive preload or overload rapid and deep spalling, making me skeptical of bearings load carrying capabilities of those cheap chinese generic bearings. Fit Timkens every time!
