Does anyone know anything about hitch dampers on caravans? I have a trailer which is an old caravan base, the hitch damper is shagged, I spoke to a local caravan place they said they are all unique and are around ?65 + vat each. is there any reason why I can't use a shock of a mini it looks about the same

Are the hitch dampers spring return?

Anyway all it is is a damper to make pulling away a bit smoother and stop the breaks suddenly coming on. I recon if the compressed and extended lengths are close enough then it'll be fine.

Only one way to find out, put it on, give it a go and see if you notice any differance, I reckon you won't.

I'd certinally try it before shelling out 70 squid.

Yeah plenty of people have done that, converted a knackered old caravan into a car trailer.
They are not usually that stable as the car sits quite high up on the trailer, whereas a Brian James or similar gets the weight of the car lower down by placing the wheels further apart hence the bed is in between the wheels.
But for a small lightweight car, they are perfectly adequate.

theproblem i could see is that the chassis of the tralior stops at the axle, so what do people do in order to safely cary a car? (bearing in mind that the majority of the weight should be balanced over the axle- not for your benifit, but for others who wonder why i am asking a stupid question) extend the chassis?

Jimster,
Marks older trailor is based on a caravan chassis i think, it uses a mini shock as a damper, Neil should be able to take a pic for you, if needed.
