got my engine running last night, i've changed to a pre verto flywheel now with a grey diaphragm.

just wondered if its normal for the revs to drop about 100 or so if that when you press the clutch in? you can hear the s/c drops rattling a little at idle but then they stop when you clutch in? am i worrying over nothing or should i be checking stuff out?

we've adjusted up the clutch as per haynes but seeing as this the first time i've messed with a pre-verto setup then maybe something could be wrong here?

havent driven it more than a foot yet, just tested 1st and reverse in the garage last night thats all.

Yes that can be normal. The spring on the grey diaphragm is stronger to give the increase clamping load. When you compress this, the reaction force comes from the thrust washers up against the crank. This force on them produces a force that counters the rotational force of the engine, hence it slows down.

Also correct what you say about the drops, they always chatter a bit when running, when you have dipped the clutch they stop rattling as they are not being driven, as the clutch is in. If anything, the noise stopping is a good sign as it means you know for definate that the clutch is releasing fully and is not dragging.

It's when the revs drop by 1000 rpm or so you need to worry.

I seem to remember someone called egvard or somet like that showed a picture (only once) of some goosed thrusts?

Greys will eat your thrust washers... but then again without an uprated clutch you will not transmit engine power to the road!!

Glad you've got it on the road *happy*

A bit like thi. The thrusts on the left and right should look similar.

Mine were goosed as well Homepage is funnily enough down, so ni pictures.
Check crankshaft endfloat VERY carefully, and make sure that the diaphragm springs is completely flat. If you're running less then 10psi of boost I bet that an orange will suffice. I haven't tried, just comparing to N/A torque demands.

I feel that diaphragm colour codes are a bit of pub talk!
I mean, if you have a grey diaphragm, people surely will believe that you need it, thus, believing you've got a POWERFUL mota.

Did you try a properly setup orange one?

my clutch still slipped with a grey, I have done daves mod to the backplate now, if it still slips I'm going to have to try the double grey

In all honesty , I don't think that is the solution Jim. Dave and I ( Jon, Mark) do manage with the simple gray, and my grey one was not setup properly. I've now used Dave's mod as well, before this, the clutch did NOT slip, and the clamping pressure was not as high as it is now.
Maybe there are differences from diaphragm to diaphragm even if they are the same colour. British manufacturing tolerances remember :) Haha!

Mine still slips at peak torque... I should really be using a double grey - but that's just plain silly!!!

As I recall, the orange is rated at 100lb ft, the grey at 120 and the double grey at 135. The triple grey (NLA) must've been even more!!!
