I need some help! My wife commutes to Heathrow every day to work and last year this was made harder by the snow. It was so bad her car couldn’t get up the hill out of our street. Someone mentioned snow socks as an alternative to winter tyres as they are not really a viable option. Has anyone had any experiences with snow socks and does anyone have any recommendations?

I have been looking found these

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pair-ISSE-Snow-S...2#ht_1718wt_908

Most won't run on Tarmac and can be difficult to put on if you have a sport style syspension like msport. But from what I have read when the going gets tough they work.

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

snow socks are not something she'd drive with all the time so unless she's able to put them on and remove as needed they are quite useless to her, i have heard they are quite effective but i could see that depending on the gradiant of the hill.... too steep and i could see them giving the reverse effects.

We know she cant drive all the time with them, also she is savvy enough to put them on and take them off, we are just unsure of brand / type.

She has a Bmw 118d with 17in wheels.
Thanks simon.

Somewhere around Swindon

Does she worry about breaking a nail?

Serious question as fitting and removing snow socks chains or anything else in the bitter cold is not an easy task, i know my lisa would not do it.

If the transport is that important, buy snow tyres.

Snow socks are a get you out of a hole only. And would be a right pain in the hole fitting and removing them often.

And given you say it's a BMW, safety would be a big issue. She may have grip at the rear to get moving....but then no grip at all to get stopped or steer.

4 snow tyres is the safest and most sensible option. Even if not the cheapest.

Have you tried putting 3 or 4 bags of sand in the boot mate? Helps a little.

I had a pair of snow soaks last year, my company kindly bought everyone a set. They are great as long as you stay on the snow. The minute you drive on bare tarmac with them on they get fucked very quickly.

these are the ones i used, pretty simple to get on and off too

I would recommend them though

Check you can get your arm in the wheel arch to fit the snow socks. I know somebody that bought them and couldn't actually fit them because the car was too low.

Might also be worth getting a cheap anorak to keep in the boot & to wear whilst fitting them as if they're anything like snow chains then it's a messy job
