Hi,
I know that this is the general forum but because more people see this forum i thought it might be better posting it here.

Some pre-info that might not assist but a week ago i built a new exhaust running through the middle up to the end, and swapped the old SU HS2 with a Weber DCOE 40 (which was tuned on the road by a mechanic for almost 3 days and is running like a charm).

Anyways,
On Monday i drove with the car to work and it seemed to run fine but 2 blocks from home the car stalled for a second than started again (like there was no electricity and than it returned).
I arrived home and parked the car .

Today i started the car, and after 200 meters the car again turned on/off for several times and than stalled.

When i opened the boot i saw that the smoke coming off the minus cable, and when i opened the hood the minus cable was smoking hot.
I disconnected everything than. The battery itself is fine, but when i reconnected everything there was no electricity at all (lights, starter or anything).

Any thoughts?
My best guess is that the + cable is touching the body somewhere along the way but i'm not certain.
Also, that could be that the exhaust heat melted the rubber of the cable and that's why it is touching the body..

Thanks in advance,

the cable runs close to the exhaust, it usually needs moving when a performanc exhaust is fitted.

KEEP THE BATERY DISCONNECTED UNTIL YOU FIND THE ISSUE!!

Easiest way to check the positive lead is to disconnect it from the battery and put a multimeter on the lead to earth to check there is no continuity to earth.

Joe,
That's what i thought.. the battery is disconnected until the electrician will come tomorrow.

Any ideas what the consequences will be? i mean there is no car management system to burn *wink*

Thanks very much for the assistance!

normally the worst thar happens is a fire, but sounds like you might get away with replacing the cables.

The battery may be fried, but I had a similar thing years ago and I just replaced the positive lead. Mine burnt through at the front where the wire meets the subframe next to the exhaust.

I've done that when I was a lad - battery positive cable touching the exhaust where it all passes by the subframe. It melted the battery sleeve and made a constant circuit through the exhaust and engine.

Melted the battery cable, engine earth, throttle cable and boiled my brake fluid. lucky escape....
