for the record, its a 1 1/8. use a reasonably deep socket so t can reach over the shaft.

the numpty award has to go to 'Chris' at Worthing Halfrauds who recommended i removed the nut and brought it in so they could measure it.

You are thinking of a different nut mr hogster, the one he is on about is peculiar even on a mini and is the only one that is that size (1 1/8")

while changing the gear and nut, i noticed that there is some play in the shaft, not horizontaly but up and down if u know what i mean. i presume this it the slight play in the 1st motion bearing? its a steel caged bearing not a plasic one like my other box.

The actual play must of been about 1mm in total at the nose, is that ok?

A little play is to be expectedl -
The bearing is designed to be 'supported' at the nose of the first motion shaft.

Yeah, if that bearing was too "rigid" (for want of a better word) it would make assembling the drop gear casing up to the gearbox difficult as the end of the shaft (with the nose bearing) would have to be EXACTLY lined up with the outer race in the drop gear casing.

As it is, they are normally there or thereabouts, but that bit of movement helps you assemble it up, and also as Dave says, the nose bearing supports the other end.

does the nose bearing prone to a lot of wear? Cant see how u can tell when u have the transfer case on! I had a look at the inner and outer running surfaces, and the bearing rollers themselves and they all look good, no scoring etc.

I have never had a problem with a broken up/scored nose bearing, don't know anyone who has for that matter?

The only way to properly inspect it is to use a puller and draw the inner race and rollers off the end of the first motion shaft, and then trial fit it into the outer race (which is still in the casing). But to be honest by the time you have gone to the trouble of drawing the old one off the shaft, you are as well to fit a new one.........

As long as it runs smoothly and does not show signs of wear I would say you should be OK.

Seen heavilly pitted ones on old turbo lumps I've pulled apart - and these are of course stronger (larger) than the nat-aps ones...

Forgotten more than most ever know

I have never been lucky removing that bearing in one piece from the shaft. They are relatively cheap so I now replace that bearing when I do a complete rebuild.

I've seen spun bearing races on the nose one. Check that as well.
