Hi, could I get away without using an air filter over an itb setup ( just ram pipes ) Space is an issue.. As always.

I really need to change to a internal pedal box but for now am I ok to use the car without the filter? Do I just run the risk of sucking dirt in (bad enough, i know) or am I loosing power / torque?

Cheers Mark

I wouldn't risk it mate. The drag boys don't have filters but not much dirt on the drag strip.

Just having a quick read on K&N, unless youre running the pipes at say 90 degrees to the airflow (say if they were vertical) then apparantly the wind causes resistance and top end suffers. But i doubt that's a problem in your instance chap, it'd just be the matter of sucking shit into the engine. Unless moving it about i wouldnt drive it without a filter.
I suppose what you could do, although it'll look shit is place some tights over the inlets secured extremely well, and try to keep them taught but not overstretched to keep out the crap that could cause real damage if it found its way up there. Or anything else similar you might be able to lay your hands on which might flow well but keep shit out. I know somebody who ran his 998 without a filter and used tights for the noise it made the once. Although he was an idiot, it may help you out a little here.

thanks guys.

umm.. so as i thought - running a risk of engine damage - its about £130 for a filter setup on the itbs and it might not fit!

i suppose its worth a go tho and i might be able to manipulate the back plate a tad to get it to clear the masters.

I dunno mate, i can't really see that happening if you buy a good quality sock like itG or pipercross and oil it well. Better than an engine full of shite!

I'd rather have 5hp less than run without a filter. Especially on a road car.

Would a fabricated plenum and a single filter to the side work? Maybe get the filter as close to the front as poss' for cooler air temp?

I seriously doubt it!

Was it Visard who scraped all the crap off an air filter after 20 mins on a damp track, heated it up to simulate engine conditions and said it was something like grinding paste?

Cant you make some sort of plenum chamber for all of these?

Was about to say the same, could be the way to go dude, even if you move to interal pedal box.

It did have a plenum when i bought the kit.. it was shite so dismissed it.. maybe i could re-visit it.

think i would struggle for space at the base of the plenum / air box - will have to have a play with that idea.

I used an itg sock filter on the pug, it gave alot lot better throtel response over a k&n filter sounded awsome and was cheap from merlin only 12.50 they do different sizes as well.

Read Vizards bit on filters and what he has to say about tights used as air filters, very restrictive apparently. Filter socks would be your best bet temporarily.

Foam socks are OK ish flow wise when they are dry, but then they don't really filter, which defeats the point. They are little more restrictive when oiled.

I replaced the socks on my 16 valver, in favour of K&N type filters. I had to remove a shit load of air at idle to bring the AFR's and idle speed back down, which tells me that they are restrictive even without the oil. I didn't like the gritty shit I found on the engine side of the throttles when using the foam socks.

The stockings may get sucked in at higher rpm and air flow.

The foam filters IMHO are evil.

Cotton Gauze filters are the only things i'll use :)

(my opinion)

Another option - I might be able to remove the bends, add the trumpet to the body and squeeze a filter in over the top..
