Its only recently I have used 20w50 and to be honest, I don't like it.

20w50 is a good bodge for a warn engine
way too thick for a new build imo when fully up to temp its not bad but 10w40 or less i think for mine after my supply of halfrauds stuff dries up

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

Ive always used 10w40 valvoline, and never had any issues. That doesn't look like a bad price, I might use that on the next build.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

this is a bowl of contention

this subject has been coverd many times ....each to there own ....but i must add...... one turbo expert of many published books, quotes :- use nothing less than a 15/40 oil

in my book 20/50 all the way! synthetic, when the engines broke in, if the purse strings can stand it

i thought the grade of oil for the mini engine was 20/50 taking into account that its the gearbox oil as well. so what effects is there of using these other oils to the gearbox?

one day boost will be mine!

Smoother gear change, lower transmission losses, better fuel economy if you can be bothered

Well, you are not xactly building an engine for economy when you put 20psi boost through it and fuel it a little on the rich side of 11.5:1 AFR's *hehe!* but then the economy bit is really down to the right foot of the person driving, which is where the 'bovered', 'not bovered' bit comes in

If I was to build a expensive engine & gearbox, my choice would be Ravenol 15W50, a semi synthetic ester oil with API SM / JASO MA / MA2 quality specification.

It's a bike oil for use with wet clutches (should be good for the synchros?), but affordable. About the same price as the Castrol GTX 15W40 I'm currently using.

If you take a look in any Mini or Metro handbook; 20W50 - yes. In 'high temperature' climates. 15W40? Yes! 10W40? Yes! Depending on the climate... But: in ANY case a high quality oil is recommended.

Viscouosity says fook all about quality... :)

Carefull with the multi grade thing.
the 20w bit is only suitable down to -10c. Now while it is 'suitable' does not man that its actually doing your engine any good when it is cold. Consider the same 20w at 20c, well, that will work really well, but to put it into perspective, that is a 30c difference from -10.

In the British winter the average temperature is only about 5c, with extreme temperatures raching -15 to -20c overnight, that 20w is not looking so suitable.

10w on the otherhand is suitable down to -20c, so for winter at least, you should be considering changing your oil for a 10wXX

Castrol GTX is on offer at £10 for 4 litres in Asda at the moment, with various grades available. I don't use it myself, but it is a good offer if you do.
