Slightly off topic, but a lot of you seem to make all manner of things. I am going to convert a discovery gearbox to fit my defender, due to decent defender gearboxes costing tonnes. I have bagged a low milage discovery for a bargain price, therefore need to convert it. This is done by making an adaptor to extend the selector shaft to accept the defender shifter remote.

These diagrams give a rough idea of what is required with some approximate measurements, if you would be able to help please let me know. The selector shaft needs to be - give or take a touch 16mm in diameter as does counterbored hole to mate with the existing selector shaft, I will get some exact measurements.

Thanks

James

I could knock something like that up. What material were you thinking of?

It would probably need to start out as a piece of 35 or 40mm mild steel bar, so nothing to exiting!

Should be doable. How desprate are you for it? I need to sort my tailstock out first.

When i saw your diagram first thing that came to mind was a toilet roll holder - this just me or anyone else?

I'll let you know matty, I'm gonna see if my machinist will let me occupy a lathe for a while as it would be good to be able to offer it up to the box to get the size bang on.

I decided a camshaft will make a nice donar for a lump of metal, just turn a little off one of the journals and de-lobe it a bit, it'll even sit nicely in the lathe using the camshaft drive.

You are aware that cam shafts are hardened and a bugger to machine?

The one I attacked with a hacksaw the other day didn't seem too bad, its not like I need a whole camshaft delobing for 16v conversion, but point taken. a bit of bar may be easier to machine.

Just let me know, if you don't have any luck. I found some mild steel today that will do the job nicely
