Hey guys, was installing my cam shaft today and had some issues.

I as under the impression it would just push in with my hands, but it didnt. I have put in brand new camshaft bearings and lubed them up with the kent lube that came with my camshaft i went to put it in and it wouldnt go into the middle bearing, so i managed to hit it in with a hammer, only when i got it all the way in i noticed there was a long metal shard that had obv come off the camshaft or the bearing, and so i went to take it out with only a little force and it wont budge - it probably would come out if i went to hammer it out but i dont really fancy that

I was just hoping that it was because the bearing i had got was slightly too large as the other two were fine.

Thanks

Craig *oh well*

Hammering the cam in??

Seriously, if it doesn't fit then something is wrong. Inspect/measure and find the problem.

It was aligned straight and how it should have been, how easy are they to turn. I have to puut a spanner in oil pump slot and turn it with a screw driver

how did you fit the bearings?

they need to be pulled in gentely with the correct tool and a threaded bar, if you knock them in you will distort them and the cam wont fit.

ah!....

that might have been overkill!

you should be able to see where its contacting from the shiney patch, if its just one spot you might be able to scrape it til it spins.

this is a v8 but the same general idea,

http://www.cowdery.org.uk/images/v8misc/cambearing.JPG

with the threaded bar you can feel if the bearing is tight in the bore,

also, its a good idea to clean the block bore with a bit of emery cloth, and give it a good wipe and blast with WD40, any crap in the cam bearing bore will cause problems.

Did you try the bearings on the cam before installing them in the block? I've had bearings that won't go over the camshaft. They get even smaller when installed.

You could try one of these, but then you should know what you're doing....

http://tools.boxwrench.net/bearing-scraper.htm

Camshaft bearings are soft as cheese and should be treated VERY gently.

I had to scrap my centre bearing in after it was installed. It had a high spot that grabbed the cam.

I used the tool Vegard suggested, very easy to fuck up the bearing if you get it wrong though!

Hey guys! So just wipped camshaft out and bearings are fooked!

I tried getting some pictures for you guys to show you the damage

This is the small one:

This is the biggest one:

The biggest one has alot of marking in it you can kinda see it in the piccie, there was alot of shavings off of the bearings as well so spent about half an hour with a torch getting them all out. Going to get some more and im ringing southam mini metro center tomorrow to see if they can put them in properly for me.

Thanks for your help guys *smiley*

The camera in the iPhone 4S is great.

The 3GS was shocking! Looks like they were taken in murkey water!

Have you got another camera? You can barely make out the areas of concern.
