Right my final query now that I have almost got my engine built. I need to upgrade my box I'm expecting 140-150bhp and have to my name a standard recon'd mpi box with 4pin minispares diff.

Query is that I want to keep the 2.76 final drive (for now) but am unsure of whether the box will take all the added power. What are best solutions for upgrade considering I have a tight budget of £300 (£500 absolute maximum but don't want to spend this) Please bare in mind I know very little about gearboxes.

Jack.

I've had a look and I can't find anything with this exact query and there are hundreds to filter through.
I understand that the best option would be to go all out and buy a sccr box with sc drops but I can't afford. What I want to know is do I need to go any further than just upgrading the diff? If so what is the second step after the 4pin?

get straight cut drops. the box will survive if you are gentle with it. try avoid emergency starts where possible.

we had this setup in the metro van with about 150 bananas. box was ok, but the 1st motion roller bearing collapsed on the strip at Avon.

I do not intend making any rapid starts. It's for road use hense me wanting to keep the 2.76 final drive.
Is there another name for sc drops because I'm struggling to find them on minispares and min-it's website?
Ps thanks for the advice apbellamy.

Australia oi oi oi!

if you don't drive it like a dick head it will last.

double clutch gears, changes at 6000rpm it will blow.. half the fun though lol

if you potter around and blast it in gear when the gears are fully meshed i see no problem at all.

i shot peened my drop gears just don't shot peen your 4 transfer gears.

found that out the hard way lol..

everything else is ok though.

Sorry but that is crap advice. Using full available torque in gear with grip is what will break teeth. No one to my knowledge has broken any part of the selector mech, e.g. synchro hubs. Baulk ring problems are down to wear or abuse but although annoying it isn't a show stopper.

Basically there have been examples of both extremes, people using large amounts of torque with sc drops/helical gearset and vice versa.
Personally if i was on a strict budget for a road car i would go for the sc gearset, purely because i have seen more gearset failures than drops and the noise difference between the two.
Do you drive with a heavy foot? either lighten it, drop the boost or increase your budget.

Well I've never run a turbo before. I have the MRA 1380 turbo set up with 11cc pistons and a head at this spec. a 12g940 cast with 36 inlet valves & std exh valves with uprated double springs (not just std double springs) combustion chambers are std ported to a fairly good standard 11stud.
Not sure of what the outcome will be but I don't want any more than 140bhp. Turbo is garret m24. Does anyone know what I should expect from this at what boost?
And as you say as its for road use my neighbours wouldn't appreciate sc drops.
Sc gearset is probably going to be my choice. Cheers for the input.

Buy the best you can afford 140 bananas will soon become boring and the boost will get turned up. Try the bestyou can to future proof your build sc box and drops :)

A little of topic sorry. But have you worked out your compression ratio ? If the combustion chambers are standard size and you only have 11cc in the pistons you're looking at a compression ratio of about 10.5-1 with a BK450 gasket. That's if the pistons came flush with the block, they'll likely sit a bit below. But you're still looking at a high compression ratio for Turbo use ....
Not having a go in any way, just wanted to make sure you were aware.

Phil. :)

Ahh I see thanks for that. I haven't bought this head yet i "was meant to pick it up next week. I was told it was standard turbo chambers. I really don't know much about building turbo engines. Only what I have read on here in the last month. Since I decided to go turbo.
