Hey,

Just about to start the assembly of my engine (at last !) and need to select an oil to use during the build and to use to run the engine in on.

Have searched and found that I need a 'cheap mineral oil' is this something I can get at halfords ?
Or would I be better off using a specific running in oil like millers classic running in oil ?

Have also seen talk of zddp additive and how this protects the cam/followers in older engines. Does the running in oil need to have this or just the oil I will be using after running in ?

Thanks guys can't wait to get this build under way :)

Will my project ever be finished !!? hopefully you guys can help !
Its only been like 10 years in the making and I'm only just assembling my engine!

i use Graphogen assembly lube for the assembly and cheap mineral oil for running it in, not coma/duckhams ( IMO ) i am using halfruads 20/50 mineral for classics, because i had 6 gallons of the stuff *happy*
its only gonna be in there couple hundred miles, dont worry bout the zddp and if its a new cam/ followers make sure you 'knock' that in first
do a search on running in methods, i favour the 'hard' run in

Use an engine assembly lube rather than oil, or can lube and be generous *smiley*

so for running in period buy the cheapest oil you can find? I thought youd have to get the expensive stuff because its all dry and its the first run?

If you put fancy sinthetic oil in then the ring etc wont bed in properly, but renember never give it the beans with cheap oil in, it for running in only

Well as per Brett's post I was going to adopt the hard run in method of which there's info on other threads. So it will be run hard on the cheap oil. I can see how this is better to bed the rings in but it can't do the gearbox much good on such cheap oil ?
Guess it not in there that long before its swapped out for better stuff.

Also will be having another search later on tonight but anyone got any info on 'Knocking' the cam in ?
It's a new build with new cam and followers

basically start it up and let it run for 30-40 minutes about 2krpm you can wind in the idle screw to keep the revs up, if you have wide band fitted dont let it run too rich bad for the bores
keep an eye of temps/ and oil pressure just to make sure it stays in check

cant remember the exact name of the stuff i used, it was green for years and then they changed it for some regular oil coloured stuff, thats when the problems started
