Hi David,a friend in the Midget/Sprite community is also fitting a BMW box.Could you give me a bit more detail of which box you used, and I will try to extract info from him on his experience to date.Thanks.

The preferred box is the ZF, hard to find in the UK but easier in Germany it seems.

I used a Getrag which has the same bolt pattern but has a higher arch to the bell housing, meaning that the tunnel needs to be cut and enlarged.According to the Sprite and Midget club, the ZF fits without body mods,

The car of origin is a 3 series E 30.

You know I gave up on this some time ago ?

Long time since I updated, but it is now superficially completed

Lots still do do - wiring inc Megajolt, all hydraulics, entire fuel system, and full retrim of all internal surfaces.

Meanwhile I have a new yoy to distract me.

It is a Honda CRF 230 but quite heavily modified (different forks, brakes and suspension as well as a power up kit) It is my intention to do at least one more enduro next year, when I will be 70.

Too cold to work in the garage so I went into the workshop and spent 2 hours on the lathe.

It,s an adapter for the air intake hose to a GT1752, turned from solid. It uses the original V band and O ring.

Bit of an overkill really and no one will see it when its on the car, but I quite like simple little jobs like this.

Still too cold to work out there all day, but some progress.

The pump and filter look close to the exhaust, but it is just the angle of the shot.

The eagle eyed will have spotted that there is no wiring to the pump yet.

Wiring is on the agenda soon as I have installed battery, cables and alternator so that a basic charging circuit can be fitted, allowing me to set up an ignition system and start the engine for the first time in 3 years.

Wired up and running now, but still no brakes or clutch.

Made a start on the dash and console as well as installing the sound system -nothing like getting the priorities right eh ?

I am looking at buying a rather expensive (five figures) MG Magnette and reckon I will have to sell one of the A 35,s to make space, if nothing else.

The van is up for grabs, unfinished, but it won,t be cheap.

Pity to see this not finished but i suppose we have all been tempted with other cars. A five figure magnette must be a good one? Always liked them since following the exploits of brian cox with his mgb engined one in practical classics a good few years ago now

Love your style Steve!

The Magnette has recent bills for body resto of nearly £8000, the later 1622 cc engine, 5 speed gearbox and MGA diff., as well as an almost perfect interior - see why I am tempted ?

Well, I got an offer of £4000 for the van, but, with all the pressure from friends and family, I have been persuaded to keep it.

This means more time and money and the MG is now on the back burner, having looked at more than one(mostly rubbish) and realised that I need to spend 12k+ to get a decent one. That doesn,t faze me, but I have nowhere to keep three cars in safe and secure premises. I,m now leaning to selling the saloon later this year. Form an orderly queue with at least £6k in folding in your hands.

Meanwhile I have happened upon a much better way of sealing that leaky rear main bearing. MED do a kit only slightly more expensive than the Mickey Mouse version that has been around for a while, but it involves machining the rear main bearing cap, which will put some people off.

I have bitten the bullet, pulled the engine from the van, fitted this seal

Fitted Total Seal rings and new bearings and the head is going back to Benross for a refresh.

The van has to be ready for the classic car show at the NEC in November so it is back to full days in the workshop.

Will be most interested to hear your experience with this seal David. Like you I gave up on the other one years ago. Also we'll done on another starring role at the NEC. Sell the Blobule.....that'll be the day! *hehe!*

Andy, this is the Magnette

It has the bigger 1622 cc engine and a 5 speed gearbox.

It has a beautiful interior is owned by a retired engineer who spared no expense - see why I want it !
