Ey up lads, any tips for splitting balljoints? I've managed to split the ones that attach the top arm on but cant budge the lower balljoint. Im useing the fork type splitter.

Any tips would be great as I dont fancy smacking my wrist again.

get a scissor splinter. I've sprayed the forks on those types by fitting it harder

The best way I found to get the ball joints apart is to do bottom one first, then the top one because the weight of the hub excreta- helps to remove the top, the tool your using are not very good they butcher things too much, put your top ball joint back on loosely and try it this way..

These are the best tool for the job, and if you have a impact drive they work even better..

Undo track rod end, wind nut to top of thread, then setup like this using a thick washer between the nut and tool as shown
using a ratchet or a impact driver..

Undo top and bottom nuts on the ball joints and repeat as above doing bottom one first

Shove extractor on and put a thick washer between the extractor and nut, using a ratchet or impact driver break the joint

Job done

I forgot to say, the thick washer is to stop damaging the nut and the ball joint thread.. Alan

the thick washer is the important bit. I've ruined a ball joint not putting something between the splitter and nut/thread.

Thanks mate that's a brilliant guide. I eventually managed yo get them off after lots of smacking. The. Hubs aren't attached to my car ss its in bits, I've currently got my subframe n hubs on my workmate in the kitchen (nice n warm with a kettleinstead of the -6 its been outside in my metal shed)
Think my lass is getting slightly annoyed but not as much as I'd of thought.

Vote for the scissor type again. Never really done any good with a hammer type. The only joint I've ever not been able to split with a scissor type was a track rod end, ended up having the steering arm cherry red and pailing the t.r.e with a lumphammer for 10 minutes with that one.

The best power tool I ever bought was a battery impact tool, I’m willing to bet you would have done It with this tool, It makes the scissor tool 3 times better, would not be without one.. Alan

Not that joint mate! Ended up starting to bend my splitter and the threaded part of the track rod end after cranking it up with a 2ft breaker bar with as much as i could give it, fair play to the splitter for holding out so well!
But those are useful for undoing stubborn things.

The thing that I find is when your belting things with a hammer Its not solid so all you get is a bounce effect, where as the impact driver is a shock action much more effective, sounds like you got a real stubborn joint, you get that sometimes.. Alan

Definitely get an impact driver on the job. With an 18v version you'll wonder how you got by before.
Just don't tighten things up with it and remember to put a bit of penetrant on it.
