Chaps, how do you normally go about checking your gear boxes?

Do any of you have a method of testing the box whilst its off the engine?

I have a few around and I need one for the Daily Drive but have no way of knowing wether theyre any good.

Obviously im not talking about condition of teeth signs of wear etc, i mean a practical test?

Cheers

Only thing you can do mike is pull it apart. Can't really visually assess wear of bearings.

And if you have it apart you can have a look at the baulk rings etc. You could do it in an evening.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Mike, it is the clearance from the baulk ring as it slides up the synchro cone, to the synchro face. If the ring is worn you can push it right hard up to the face, then the synchro will be poor or will not work at all. Hence Roberts comment.

That paints a great image.

Mike wondering why the box wont work while holding 'extra' parts in his hand

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...
