hi guys,

i'm just getting going on a mini turbo build. Its the first time ive done anything like this so i've turned to the foum for help and advice!! At the minute the dream is to resore old mini and go on a tour around europe!! I've got the engine out and fully stripped but its got to the point that i need to start making decisions about new engine components. SO, baring in mind i'll be doing long milage, but i dont want a gutless engine can you give me any advice on the following points to start with...

engine bore and which pistons to go for??

the boost pressure that i need to be looking at?

will i be ok using a mg metro cam??

what are my options regarding the head?

final drive ratio and will i just be ok with just uprating the gearbox with a cross-pin diff... i dont really want the wine of the straight cut drops

i know there are a fair few points there but anything else you think of would be much appreciated!!

Thanks guys i look forward to the responses

Welcome, might be worth having a search through some of the 998 turbo builds. They seem relatively relaxed and can be built on a good budget.
Other than that I'd say a 1293, gt1752 turbocharger, good quality cast pistons or forged pistons. (omegas, powermax etc)
N/a mg metro cam is a good suitable cam to use.
With any turbo motor I would say at least a 3.1 f/d ratio. Helical box and drops in good condition have been proven to work up to around 140hp providing you dont do too many 'emergency starts'. If in any doubt of the gearbox, rebuild it! x-pin diff is also a very good idea.
Plenty of options to choose from! Get reading up :)

Hello

For touring around Europe I'd suggest a nice low boost high CR setup. Say 10psi with 9:1 CR (998 or 1275).

This will give good mpg and enough power to get you up the hills with all your gear in.

in a 1275 this will give an easy 120bhp with a decent head and turbo. A perfect amount to retain all the standard box. Although you will need a cross-pin diff.

Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

what will said *Yes*

re ring, rebearing etc, maybe a bit of head work if the budget allows... maybe pick up a second hand head and have the chambers taken out a bit if need be (depending on pistons) if you can get hold of a decent set of metro turbo pistons they are pretty strong, unfortunatly after market pistons have really gone up in price the last few years... +20 omega's are available from MED with a 10cc dish for £300, those with 26cc chambers in the head will get to to approx 9:1cr

MG metro cam is ideal IMO

use an MPI fuel tank for a neat boot install,

on a std box I'd go for a 3.1 or even a 2.95 final drive, it'll give the best cruising and with the wider std ratios still have plety of zip.

I would definatly look into fitting megajolt, as it can really help with fuel economy.

Swindon

personally i would go for a 1293 or a 1310 over bore (+20, +40) a gt15 vnt turbo, depending on wheels and tyres from a 3.2 with 13" to a 2.95 with 10" use a megajolt setup rather than dizzy, mg cam, nicely flowed head, ballanced bottom end for reliability and done

Thanks for the feedback, Seem to be getting similar responses! What are the benefits of the Gt15 or gt1752 over the t3?? Would you definitely make the change and what's involved to change it???

Thanks

The T3 is a 'kick in the arse' type of turbocharger, whereas the gt turbos give a much smoother power delivery.

welcome and the gt15 anf gt17 are more modern turbos compared to the likes of the t2 and t3.
