As above, used hammerite in the past, never ran the engine since but from working on/around it has chipped real easy, what does people recommend?

Cheers.

Edit: the engine was cleaned/degreased well, maybe if I took it back to bare metal it may stick better?

I've always used the engine enamel - cant recall the make but all the accessory shops tend to have it.

I recall having a discussion with my painter a few years back about painting the block using 'standard' paint; he didn't think it was an issue in principle but had more concern with reaction with the original block enamal

While it is all stripped down I have started taking it back to bare metal with a wire brush attachment

I'll paint it up when its built up.

Machine enamel. Give Somerford Minis a call they do it in brush on or aerosol

I seriously doubt it!

Got half way through taking the paint off and my drill has given up, the build is starting Thursday, running out of time.

Got some nitromors tonight, I have used ut before with no luck, thought I would give it a 2nd chance, brought the top layer of paint off with no probs, the bottom layer however didn't, but made is 10x easier to come off with a wire brush drill attachment

Would reccomend it to anyone wanting to remove the paint from there block.

I used some red engine paint years ago and it turned bloody salmon pink the first time the engine warmed up. I think it was 'Car Plan' paint.

I used hammerite when I rebuilt my engine. I think I may have done too many coats too quick, as it just wouldn't properly dry while sat in the garage. I had to be careful putting the engine back in the car as the paint was so easy to mark, but once the engine was warmed up it finally dried.

When I dud mine in hammerite I planned to cure it with a heat gun, but never got round to it and it came off real bad.

I usualy use a decent enamal paint the trick is getting it clean i use swarfreargerer degreaser stuff your meant to dilute it 100:1 with water for general use but neat it disolves oil and grease rather fast (as well as fingers and clothes) after a good rinse off and a thorough dry the paint sticks rather well
it was £7 for a litre at halfrauds last time i bought some
avoid yellow paint like the plague ive used about 5 different brands on my car they all chip so bad

Yeah I think the paint comes in 2nd to the cleanliness off the surface, mine will be bare metal and I'm going to clean the bollocks off it, should be clean enough then.

Benross has always said to use normal non drip household gloss, tbh I've seen a lot of his engines and heads and the finish is very good

Ive used normal gloss paint before and it works fine. I always clean the block down with thinners and a rag before painting until you start to see the shine of the metal.

Ive found spray paints tend to loose there shine once the block has warmed up, but the brush on paints don't. *oh well*

Cheers matty, the engine is now bare, never realised how many sand inclusionsłdefects they have, engine will be built up then painted, as I have a tendancy to be a bit rough with the engine lol.
