Germini, black forrest

Hi!

Winter break, time for silly thoughts... We've all seen harrys pressure fed idler gear. Now - would it make sense to combine that with a bush instead of a roller bearing? I guess two bushes would need to be very carefull reamed in line.

But basically, would it make sense to support the idler gear journals like crank journals? Plus fixed thrust bearings, like on the crank?

Just some thoughts to keep me occupied... *happy*

Cheers,
Jan

The details of Harry's mod has come up before and it has allways surprised me that it works.

As a general rule, roller bearings don't like to be pressure fed, especially not needle rollers or high speed bearings - if they are over-fed with oil, the rollers stop rolling and start sliding.

Especially true of needle rollers because their small diameter means they have to revolve very fast and they usually don't have a cage so rub against each other which means they don't like to roll in the first place.

But it is a general rule so maybe what Harry is seeing is improvement on the thrust washers wear rate is covering up any wear on the needles.

So, back to the question, if I was doing a pressure fed setup, I would use plain bearings in preference.

But it's only theory unless someone tries it.....

Hmmmm... Maybe the tight packing of needles & pressurised oil outweight one anothers negative effects?

The idler bearings are not pressure fed, just gravity fed in the normal way. It's only the thrust bearings that are pressure fed.

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...
