The Haynes manual describes the temporary use of a large plain washer during the process of tightening up the hub nut. I am new to the disk bake setup having had drums previously. Just wondering whether people follow this method or simply don't bother.

I think the reason for the washer is so that you can pull everything in to the correct position before putting the split tapered washer on

If everything is fitted correctly it all should push together by hand without the need for pre - tightening I seriously doubt it! |

However for anyone with half an ounce of common sense it's pretty obvious when all is well or not as the case may be.

Just use your free hand, push the driveshaft firmly toward you, whilst tightening up with a ratchet before torquing up is my method of doing it. On 26th Jan, 2012 Tom Fenton said:

I use a dead blow hammer to drive the flange onto the splines as I tighten the nut finger tight.
