The Haynes manual describes the temporary use of a large plain washer during the process of tightening up the hub nut. I am new to the disk bake setup having had drums previously. Just wondering whether people follow this method or simply don't bother.

If it is necessary, where can I purchase such a washer from?

Thanks
Simon

I do have one of those, but most of the time I cant find it so dont bother with it,

just torque it up undo it and turque it up again, then check it after a few miles.

I see no need to use one of those washers

I seriously doubt it!

I think the reason for the washer is so that you can pull everything in to the correct position before putting the split tapered washer on

I have seen the split tapered washer lock up before everything has seated properly, meaning the bearings are loose

If everything is fitted correctly it all should push together by hand without the need for pre - tightening

I seriously doubt it!

This is spot on the reason for the procedure involving the flat washer.

However for anyone with half an ounce of common sense it's pretty obvious when all is well or not as the case may be.

Just use your free hand, push the driveshaft firmly toward you, whilst tightening up with a ratchet before torquing up is my method of doing it.

I use a dead blow hammer to drive the flange onto the splines as I tighten the nut finger tight.

Never heard of that washer.
