Chaps I need to replace my current 12" setup to get 10s on, Ive seen a set of 7" Cooper Brakes for sale. Ive never used these but ive been told there about as useful as a snooze button on a smoke alarm? Is this true? If not i think Ill go for the MiniSpares S Kit at £220.

Cheers

Mike

I've got s brakes and I don't think much of them really, so I wouldnt bother with the smaller 7 inch type.

one day boost will be mine!

They are very rare, all I have ever heard about them is that they are no better than drums, possibly not even as good as drums.
You can't go wrong with the Cooper S stuff, they are good brakes with some decent quality pads in.

This is what Id expected. Ive used S Brakes on most of my minis and never had any issues. Its just a sets come up cheap, but its the last place I want to scrimp on money!

Bear in mind that you'll need different CV joints to use the 7" cooper brakes. The drive flange runs over a thinner CV spline all the way through the hub bearings.

This might sway it in the favor of the S setup cost wise.

Had both, they are not as rare as you would think as plenty of people take them off their coopers to replace with 7.5" s brakes so plenty of sets lying around really. I had a mk1 1330 with them on and drove to lemans in it and beleive me it was scary, had them refurbed for the journey and still rubbish, worse than drum brakes. Its hard to beleive the difference with s brakes after all ones 7" and the other 7.5" but 10 times better. They are only any good for concourse cars that need to be original, on a performance mini they are borderline dangerous.

Keith had them on his van - in good fettle, they are as good a well adjusted drum set up - the only real benefit is they won't go out of adjustment like drums will.

Personally, i'd go for one of the aftermarket set-ups but if your getting them cheap, they could be worth a punt to make some cash

My smoke alarms have a snooze button on. I press it when it tells me my bacon is ready.

997 Cooper Brakes (Not cooper s 7.5") Brakes are just about as much good as drum brakes (wank) to be fair, IMO Id by a set of 7.5 as parts, and replacements are so widely used :) 7" brakes are expensive!

Hijacking the thread a little bit here but are cooper s brakes supposed to have the pad retaining kit like the 8.4 set up or just split pins?

Mine too, but then it chirps at me annoyingly for the next half hour, perhaps then 7 inch discs about as usefull as an ash tray on a motorbike? I have had experience of a set and yes they were rubbish.

Quarry Bonk

Just pins on the 7.5"
When i went from my old 8.4" ae with blackstuff to my 7.5" minispares with m1144 pads the braking was better. Down to pads I reckon not how big they are to a certain extent and how many pistons they've got.
But coincidentally I was having a conversation with somebody the other day who had some 7" back in the day and the opinion was they were shite!

They use 7" brakes in racing, so they canot be as bad as drums as long as you get the proper pads. You also won't have to adjust every fortnight. I'd prefer them to drums.

Cheers V, the brakes were on egay and have gone silly! So theyre out of the question. Ive managed to source a set of S Brakes.

Its an interesting point on pads though, my MiniSport 4 Pots were rubbish with the standard pads. I fitted some mintex ones and it made a 100% difference in the feel of the brakes.

So we are pretty much all of the opinion that half an inch makes a big difference. *hehe!*
