Germini, black forrest

Hi!

I've examined all my 1275cc blocks I have - the only with bores that look like they are usable is +.20 block. No vertical grooves, no 'steps' in the bores and pistons are also OK (ring gaps all OK ande within tolerance).

Only one problem: number two cylinder had rust on top of the bore. There's a horizontal mark in the bore after honing and the cylinderwall is colored dark. The mark is feelable by fingernail. It's maybe 2mm below the 1st ring on TDC.

Question: will this be usable?? It's not going to be a high performance engine. MG cam, stock large valve head - and that's it. Quick & dirty low-budget racing.

Cheers,
Jan

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.

I have the advantage of being able to change engines more easily than in a mini, so I would definitely use the that block and see what happens. If it smokes or rattles you are no worse off except that you will need to strip before following Vegards suggestion.

Clean it up with a bit of wet/dry and wd40 or oil and see what it's like.

It would need to be pretty severe rust to make it worth worrying about, which would leave obvious pitting.

Or a quick DIY hone of the bore to clean it off.

There's a slight horiontal groove, looks like a ring stuck to the wall and left a mark. But since it's the best I have - I'll give it a try... :)
