Guys

I'm going to look at an 02 2.0 tdci LX 5 door tonight for my brother (again!). Car has done 110k.

I've seen a few things mentioned on the forum in the past about these so thought I ask for a definitive list of bits to look at/for as I know very little about Fords

Can anyone tell me what sort of MPG he could expect running about town (not heavy booted)?

cheers

Rob

Dual mass flywheel, starter motor - these are linked, usually the first symptom of the flywheel failing is that the starter motor stops working, due to getting full of the broken up bit of the duel mass flywheel. Listen for any knocking/rattling esp at idle. Look for a shiny starter, or any mention of a new starter in the service history info.
Injector problems, make sure it starts quickly and easily whether cold or hot, make sure there is not excessive black shite coming out the back.
Rot, yes its a Ford, no they aren't perfect even now, although they are a LOT better than Fords of old. Check door bottoms.
The suspension is good for a big car, but listen carefully for any knocks/clonks. We went round the Ring in my mate Phils 115bhp Estate.

White smoke on start. Flashing glowplug light , indicates fucked pump/injectors/bent conrods.. I just replaced all 4 injectors pump and 4rods on my 55 plate... Pump breaks up ,fills injectors with swarf, they stick open and hydraulic the engine :) only external clues are white smoke on cold start and a rough idle.

Expect high 40/low 50 around town :) they are cracking if you get a goodun!

Clutch on air con pump which drives the altenator. Exhaust back box. constant pulling to the left (suspension geometry issue). Crap radio reception. FORD badge on the front (Fix Or Repair Daily).

pulling to the left is subframe jigging issue, easily fixed with the correct locking pins, current vauxhall vectra and honda accord suffer the same after a clutch/gearbox/dmf change.

Trouble with an 02 is it has the earlier engine, like mine.

Dual Mass Flywheel and, like Tom says, starter fails from the DMF swarf- but you will hear the flywheel rattling itself to death before the starter fails.

The VNT turbo failed on mine too although this mainly happens on later models with the electronic actuator - but it didn't stop my one from pretending it was the newer type.....

All my failures were at a genuine 65k miles.

I'm on 67k miles since finally changing the DMF and turbo - it's such a piece of crap I abandoned it for nearly 4 years hence the low total mileage and the latest problem is split boost hoses.

The only thing that hasn't failed on mine yet is the injectors or the HP fuel pump (leading to bent rods as mentioned) but I guess I'm only a few months away.

The early ones are seriously crap - the Euro 4 engines are better (Ford got someone else to design it) but just join TalkFord dot com to see what the earlier ones are like.

The subframe alignment is probably because the subframe will have been dropped numerous times before to change the flywheel and not put back on with alignment pins.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

Ours has just had its clutch/flywheel done... On 147K miles! It was owned from new by my father in law and was used gently for 100mile + everyday.

Rear suspension bushes replaced, but still rattles at the back. The Ghia X has 17's and seems to chew tyres pretty quickly *frown*

Get a good one and they're nice cars

Forgot about the injector sticking open. That was under warranty thank god. Tok them 4 days to identify. They fitted a new pump because there was no fuel pressure then wanted to take it back of before I could have the car back. Also needed rear bushes at a similar mileage. I never found it the most comfortable car to drive but the 6 speed 130bhp pulled like a bastard. Wish I kept the pudg 406

V belt tensioners vibrating on idle, they are a pig to change too. engine so close to the body I had to cut down an allen key to undo the top bolt. I've done a few front springs too. usually break, wind down the shocker and cut a nice groove into the inner sidewall. Oh and the bonnet release mechanisms.

I am about to sell my 04 2.0TDCI Ghia, its the auto version, tiptronic I think they call it with the option to shift manually on the stick or steering wheel. car has done 185K but well looked after and still drives like new. Its the 130bhp version and goes like stink. Slightly less mpg than the manual. few scrtches and one or two minor faults if you are interested can message with more details

I can repair the newer type actuators, done 3 to date, there not even available separately from ford, you have to buy a complete turbo!

A wise move rob, i absolutely love mine to drive, but if you get a bad un your in for a world of pain! i bought mine for buttons as a non runner so knew what i was getting into.
